HISTORY

The common name for Trichocereus species in the garden is San Pedro, they are a fast-growing columnar cactus native to the Andes Mountains. The history of San Pedro is intertwined with Andean culture and traditional medicine, with archaeological evidence showing healers using the plant as far back as 3000 years ago. San Pedro has a history of being used during shamanic rituals and ceremonies. The San Pedro ritual is known as a mesa, and it was done with the purpose of healing a sick person for whom normal treatment did not work, or to obtain money, recover one’s lover or find lost objects or animals.

HOW TO GROW

San Pedro is a popular ornamental in the garden. As a sturdy vertical design element, it is able to fit into tight spaces and grow to about 3-5m tall when planted. A single stem will pup from the base and also branch, creating a staggered clump of fast-growing heads with a well-balanced form. These cacti grow well in fertile, moist, well-drained soils in full sun, while also doing well on mineral soils in part-sun conditions. Appreciates light shade during hot summers as too much sun may burn the plant. Water regularly when in active growth. Soil should be allowed to dry before watering again. Does great in pots!

CACTUS FLOWERS

These cacti generally flower once they are about 1.5-2m in height, while being watered and fed regularly during the hot months. The buds usually form during summer and flower into mid-autumn. Fertilizers high in potassium, calcium, and magnesium encourage flowering and rot resistance, avoid nitrogen-heavy fertilizers. When flowering, each bloom will only last 1 or 2 nights! So pay close attention when the buds are forming. In order to get fruit you need to cross-pollinate with a separate Trichocereus that is also flowering at the same time.
